WIMBERLYGUNJ | OCTOBER 27, 2026 | DWEEP TULIKA | ANDAMAN NEWS

The Government Pensioners’ Association of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has formed a branch committee at Wimberlygunj following a meeting of government pensioners held at the Gram Panchayat Hall in the area, according to a press release issued by the association on October 26.

The meeting was presided over by K. Mohammed, a retired headmaster, and was attended by around 90 government pensioners from Wimberlygunj and adjoining areas.

Pensioners Discuss Central Government Policies

Addressing the gathering, D. Ayyappan, former General Secretary of the Non-Gazetted Government Officers Association, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, spoke about what he described as measures affecting pensioners under the Central Government.

He referred to provisions of the Finance Act, 2025, arguing that the government had been authorised to differentiate between pensioners based on their retirement dates. According to Ayyappan, this could affect the pension-related benefits available to different groups of retirees.

He also called upon pensioners in rural South Andaman to participate in nationwide agitation over various pension-related demands.

The concerns and interpretations expressed at the meeting reflect the association representatives’ positions. The specific legal implications of the Finance Act provisions were not independently assessed for this report.
