A new digital platform, ‘Verify U’, has been introduced in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the stated objective of helping identify people during emergencies and enabling quicker access to their basic, medical and emergency-contact information.
The application was demonstrated during an event attended by chief guest Nand Kishore Singh, Captain Saurabh and other guests and participants.
According to the developers, the platform combines facial recognition, emergency contacts, location services and controlled access to medical information, with potential applications in road accidents, cases involving unconscious persons, elderly people, children and women's safety.
Facial Recognition for Emergency Identification
One of the key use cases presented during the demonstration involved an unconscious person following a road accident.
The developers explained that identifying an accident victim and establishing contact with their family can sometimes take considerable time. They said Verify U is intended to allow another person to scan the face of a registered individual through the application and retrieve relevant identification and emergency information.
The presentation referred to a target of approximately one minute for obtaining such information.
The developers also highlighted potential applications involving elderly persons who become lost or confused and children who may be unable to communicate their identity.
According to the presentation, facial identification could potentially help reconnect such individuals with their families.
SOS and Nearby Emergency Alerts
The application also includes an SOS function.
During the demonstration, developers said that activating the SOS feature sends an alert along with Google location information to designated monitoring points.
They further stated that registered users within a five-kilometre radius could receive notifications, potentially creating a network of nearby people who may be able to respond to an emergency.
The broader concept presented at the event is to bring several emergency-related functions into a single platform.
Medical Information With Restricted Access
Verify U also includes a medical-information section.
According to the developers, medical information is intended to remain confidential rather than being openly accessible to every user.
They explained that access involves an OTP-based process and consent from registered family contacts before medical details can be provided to a doctor.
The stated objective is to enable medical professionals to obtain relevant information during an emergency while maintaining restrictions around sensitive personal information.
Questions Over Data Security
The use of facial recognition and personal information also prompted questions regarding data security.
The developers stated that information submitted through the application is encrypted and that the platform uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) servers in India.
They also said privacy considerations have been incorporated into the system.
These security and privacy claims were made by the developers during the event and have not been independently verified by Dweep Tulika.
The Connectivity Challenge
An important question for the Islands is whether the application can function when internet connectivity is unavailable.
The developers acknowledged that the current version of Verify U operates online and therefore depends on internet connectivity.
They said work is underway to make the application lighter and potentially enable operation in environments with limited connectivity.
This could be particularly important in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where connectivity can vary between locations.
The Platform Depends on Public Participation
The developers said the effectiveness of Verify U would depend significantly on how many people register and keep their information updated.
Their stated vision is to build a sufficiently large user network so that an unidentified person encountered during an emergency has a greater possibility of being recognised through the platform.
Chief guest Nand Kishore Singh also shared a personal experience involving a medical emergency and difficulties in immediately connecting with family contacts.
He said such experiences highlighted the importance of accessible emergency information and expressed support for the initiative.
He also appealed to the media to create greater public awareness about the platform and encourage people to consider registering.
A Promising Concept — But Real-World Performance Will Matter
Verify U presents an ambitious proposition: using facial recognition, emergency contacts, location services and controlled access to medical information to create a common emergency-support network.
For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, however, its practical effectiveness will depend on several factors:
- Number of registered users
- Accuracy of facial recognition
- Internet availability
- Data protection
- Emergency response mechanisms
- Accuracy and maintenance of user information
- Coordination with emergency and medical services
The developers themselves acknowledged that the current version requires internet connectivity, making network availability an important consideration for wider adoption.
Claims regarding response times, medical benefits, security and technological effectiveness remain statements made by the developers during the event and will require independent evaluation as the platform is used in real-world emergencies.
The Real Test Begins After the Launch
Technology can potentially reduce the time between an emergency and identification of a person.
But technology alone cannot guarantee a successful rescue.
The effectiveness of Verify U will ultimately depend on whether people register, whether their information remains accurate, whether the system works reliably when needed and whether emergency responders can effectively act on the information provided.
For an island territory where connectivity itself can sometimes be a challenge, that practical test may be particularly important.
This report is based on the proceedings and statements made during the Verify U event. Technical, medical, security and performance claims made by speakers have been attributed and are not independently verified by Dweep Tulika.
