Sri Vijaya Puram, September 23, 2026:

The Hinterland Seamen Union (CITU) has raised the issue of long-pending wage revision for seamen working aboard vessels owned by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

According to a news release issued by the union on September 23, Union President D. Ayyappan and CITU State Committee Member E. Rudraiah met the Secretary (Shipping), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, to discuss the pending wage revision.

The union said that a proposal for wage revision had already been sent by the Administration to the Government of India and is currently awaiting approval. The Secretary (Shipping), according to the union, assured the representatives that the matter would be pursued with the concerned officials of the Government of India.

The union stated that wage revision for crew members working in the inter-island sector has been pending since April 2012, while revision for the foreshore sector has been pending since April 2018. It pointed out that wage revision is ordinarily required every two years and said the affected employees are consequently continuing with wage structures fixed several years ago.

According to the release, the wage revisions for both sectors have already been finalised but have not been implemented because the Administration has forwarded the proposal to the Government of India for approval. The union described this as a departure from the earlier practice followed in the matter.

The Hinterland Seamen Union has circulated the release to print and electronic media seeking coverage of the issue.
