Heavy overnight rainfall drenched Mumbai, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange Alert for the city and neighbouring districts.
Mumbai, June 24:
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday following intense overnight showers that affected the city and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. In view of the continuing monsoon activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, including Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg.
According to the IMD, moderate to intense spells of rain are expected to continue over the region, with the possibility of waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions in low-lying areas.
Rainfall data released by civic authorities showed that Mumbai received around 195 mm of rainfall between 8:00 a.m. on June 23 and 8:00 a.m. on June 24.
Among different parts of the city:
- Mumbai City: Approximately 195 mm
- Eastern Suburbs: Around 167 mm
- Western Suburbs: Nearly 208 mm
The heavy downpour led to slow-moving traffic on several roads, while authorities remained on alert to respond to any flooding or emergencies.
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and follow updates issued by local authorities.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active over Maharashtra, intermittent heavy showers are expected in the coming days.
